The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the nominations for the 97th Academy Awards, set to take place on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Leading the pack is the French-Mexican musical
Emilia Pérez, which garnered 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Jacques Audiard, and acting nods for Karla Sofía Gascón and Zoe Saldaña. Gascón's nomination is particularly historic, as she becomes the first trans woman to be nominated for Best Actress.
Following closely are The Brutalist and Wicked, each with 10 nominations. The Brutalist, directed by Brady Corbet, received nods for Best Picture, Best Director, and acting nominations for Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones. The film explores the life of a visionary architect and his struggles in post-war America.
Wicked, the much-anticipated adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical, secured nominations in major categories, including Best Picture, Best Director for Coralie Fargeat, and acting nods for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. Erivo's portrayal of Elphaba earned her a Best Actress nomination, while Grande's performance as Glinda garnered her a Best Supporting Actress nod.
Other notable nominations include:
- Best Actor: Timothée Chalamet for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, Colman Domingo in Sing Sing, and Ralph Fiennes in Conclave.
- Best Actress: Demi Moore makes a notable return with a nomination for her role in the horror film The Substance, and Fernanda Torres is recognized for her performance in Brazil's I'm Still Here, which also secured a Best Picture nomination
