A$AP Rocky Rejects Plea Deal as Assault Trial Commences

Grammy-nominated rapper A$AP Rocky, born Rakim Mayers, has declined a prosecution plea offer as his trial begins in Los Angeles. The 36-year-old artist faces two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, stemming from a November 2021 incident involving former friend Terell Ephron, also known as A$AP Relli. If convicted, Rocky could face up to 24 years in prison.

The prosecution's final offer required Rocky to plead guilty to one assault charge, with a recommended sentence of 180 days in jail, a seven-year suspended prison term, and three years of probation. Rocky respectfully declined the deal, opting to proceed to trial.

The charges relate to an alleged altercation near a Hollywood hotel, where Ephron claims Rocky fired multiple shots, grazing his knuckles. Rocky has pleaded not guilty, with his defense asserting that the firearm in question was a starter pistol used for security purposes.

Jury selection commenced on January 21, 2025, with over 100 potential jurors summoned. Opening statements are anticipated once the jury is seated. Superior Court Judge Mark Arnold emphasized that Rocky's celebrity status should not influence the proceedings. The trial is expected to last approximately three weeks and will be televised following jury selection.

Rocky's partner, singer Rihanna, with whom he shares two sons, was not present at the trial's onset. The couple's high-profile relationship has kept Rocky in the public eye, despite the legal challenges he faces.

As the trial unfolds, the credibility of Ephron's testimony and the nature of the firearm will be central to the case. The outcome could significantly impact Rocky's career and personal life, underscoring the high stakes involved.
