The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has postponed the announcement of the 97th Academy Awards nominations for a second time due to the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles. Originally scheduled for January 17, the nominations were first moved to January 19 and are now set to be revealed on January 23, 2025.
In a joint statement, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang expressed their concern: "We are all devastated by the impact of the fires and the profound losses experienced by so many in our community." They emphasized the Academy's commitment to unity within the film industry during this challenging time.
To accommodate members affected by the wildfires, the Academy has extended the voting period for nominations through January 17. Additionally, the annual Oscar nominees luncheon, originally scheduled for February 10, has been canceled, and the Scientific and Technical Awards presentation has been postponed indefinitely. Despite these changes, the 97th Academy Awards ceremony remains scheduled for March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
The wildfires have had a significant impact on the entertainment industry, leading to the postponement of various events and productions. The 30th Annual Critics' Choice Awards, initially set for January 12, have been rescheduled for January 26. Several film premieres and television productions have also been delayed or canceled due to safety concerns and poor air quality.
As the Los Angeles community continues to grapple with the devastation caused by the wildfires, the Academy and other organizations are adjusting their schedules and events to prioritize safety and support for those affected.
