Stephen A. Smith's Critique of Serena Williams' Super Bowl Appearance Sparks Debate

ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith has ignited controversy with his remarks regarding Serena Williams' participation in the Super Bowl LIX halftime show. Williams made a surprise appearance during Kendrick Lamar's performance, dancing to "Not Like Us," a track known for its critical references to rapper Drake, whom Williams was rumored to have dated in the early 2010s.

On his podcast "First Take," Smith commented, "If I’m your husband, I’m thinking, 'Why are you up there trolling him — trolling your ex?' If I’m married, and my wife is going to troll her ex — go back to his ass. Because clearly you don’t belong with me. What you worried about him for — and you with me?"

These statements have been met with significant backlash. Whoopi Goldberg, co-host of "The View," criticized Smith's perspective, stating, "Why wasn’t it, 'Damn, Serena was great'? Why is it about some ex-boyfriend she hasn’t thought of? All you can think of is her ex-boyfriend? I don’t understand. Why would you even think it was [about Drake]? Why would you think she’s not smart enough?"

In response to the criticism, Smith took to social media to clarify his remarks, emphasizing that he was discussing the situation from a general male perspective and did not intend any disrespect toward Williams. He wrote, "Please go back and look at exactly what I said. I was talking overall from a man’s perspective — highlighting what most men would think.

I didn’t utter a single disrespectful word about Serena. No issues with folks getting upset of literal serious stuff one’s pissed about. This doesn’t qualify peeps. Come on. We were joking around on @FirstTake. Damn y’all! It’s not that serious."

Williams' husband, Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, defended his wife against the criticism. He highlighted that Williams had faced similar backlash for performing the same dance at the 2012 Summer Olympics after winning a gold medal. Ohanian emphasized the cultural significance of the dance and challenged the perspectives of the critics.

This incident has sparked a broader discussion about the scrutiny female athletes face regarding their personal lives and the double standards that often accompany public performances.
