Supporters of Impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol Storm Seoul Courthouse Following Extended Detention

In the early hours of January 19, 2025, hundreds of supporters of South Korea's impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol forcibly entered the Seoul Western District Court after a judge extended Yoon's detention. The court had granted a 20-day extension, citing concerns that Yoon might destroy evidence related to his declaration of martial law in December 2024.

The protesters breached police barricades, vandalized property, and clashed with law enforcement officers, resulting in significant damage to the courthouse. Acting President Choi Sang-mok condemned the attack as "unimaginable" and pledged to implement enhanced security measures. Authorities reported 46 arrests and several injuries among both protesters and police.

Yoon Suk Yeol was arrested on January 15, 2025, becoming the first sitting South Korean president to be detained. He faces charges of insurrection and abuse of power following his attempt to impose martial law on December 3, 2024, a move that escalated into a political crisis. The Constitutional Court is currently assessing whether to permanently remove him from office following his impeachment.

Political reactions to Yoon's extended detention have been polarized. His conservative People Power Party expressed regret over the decision, while the opposition Democratic Party supported the move as essential for restoring order. Yoon's lawyers argue that his detention is illegal, maintaining his innocence and asserting that the martial law declaration was a necessary measure to address legislative gridlock.

The incident underscores the deep political divisions within South Korea and raises concerns about the stability of its democratic institutions. As the legal proceedings continue, the nation remains on edge, awaiting further developments in this unprecedented situation.
